I'm a Netflix member. That means that I watch a lot of DVDs, usually during the wee hours. I've found some real gems that are definitely worth a look if you also use Netflix (and I suppose Blockbuster). I thought I'd share some of them with you. Here's a start...

I've been watching Korean dramas on local TV for years now, so I'm over the initial culture shock. Some of them are really good. Currently, I watch The Great King Sejong every Saturday and Sunday night. This is about the fourth king of Chosun/Joseon (various romanizations) Dynasty Korea, circa 1420, who was a real innovator. It takes a lot to get the title of Great before your name.

My favorite series so far has been The Immortal Yi Soon-Shin, the genius and incorruptible navy admirable who spearheaded the defeat of the Japanese when they invaded Korea in 1592-1598, never losing a battle. He was arrested and tortured for his patriotism by the jealous king and partisan court, only to be called back to duty when his replacement got the entire fleet, save for 12 ships, destroyed. Ordered to be arrested a second time, he died during the last battle before that could happen. Good luck finding this on DVD though. It's out of print, but Amazon has downloadable episodes - warning: there are 104 episodes (the DVD sets were abridged). EDIT: Some teasers (may not have subtitles), First Sea Battle, First Battle with Turtle Ship, Battle for Pusan, and another, fourth greatest naval battle in history, and probably the best teaser (YouTube is your friend).

Anyway, here's some good Korean DVDs I recommend:

Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War: sort of like Band of Brothers during the Korean War.

Musa the Warrior: A really good warrior action movie.

The Grand Chef: This is a TV series, and a good introduction to Korean dramas. It involves a restaurant and challenges in which two brothers (one's adopted) must compete, but it also has a sense of humor and is quirky. Volume 2 (of 2) just came out, but I haven't seen it yet.

There you have it. My initial picks. I really enjoyed these, so give them a chance. |
