Charms and Curses
New ways to look at spells in Bloodshadows 3E.

Charms are essentially wards that a caster can hand out to allies. They unleash beneficial spells when activated by the wearer/holder. A few sample charms are provided below. Charm of Unburdening
Alteration (Vitomancy)
difficulty: 16
casting: 30 minutes
range: 0
duration: 2 weeks
feedback: 6
effect: -5diff on tasks made to lift objects
inscriptions: list of heavy objects
charges: 1 (ward)
The caster inscribes a list of heavy items on an object to be the charm and concentrates. When the charm is activated by its wearer/holder, all of the character’s tasks to lift objects are modified by -5diff for the duration of this spell. Since the effect is charged into the charm, it must be worn or held by the character activating it to be of any use. Note that this charm does not affect demons or the undead. Charm of Protection (specific source of damage)
Alteration (Vitomancy)
difficulty: 12
casting: 1 hour
range: 0
duration: 1 week
feedback: 2
effect: +3 armor against one source of damage
components: sticks, flame (destroyed)
inscriptions: poem about being healthy
charges: 1 (ward)
The caster inscribes a poem about being healthy on an object to be the charm and concentrates. This spell covers any one source of damage (like fire, bullets, or acid), but each one is considered a separate spell—the source of damage must be specified when this spell is chosen. When the charm is activated by its wearer/holder, that character receives a bonus of +3 to his armor rating against the chosen source of damage (note that this only affects armor, and not immunity or padding). Since the effect is charged into the charm, it must be worn or held by the character activating it to be of any use. Note that this charm does not affect demons or the undead. Curses are spells that are either created as wards or designed to be easy enough to unleash at a moment’s notice. Their intention is to harm or otherwise hinder the caster’s enemies. A few sample curses are provided below. Curse of Nadil
Alteration (Vitomancy)
difficulty: 16
casting: 1 turn
range: 10
duration: 10 minutes
feedback: 8
effect: +4diff on all tasks, -1 armor/padding
components: doll made to resemble target (destroyed)
gestures: break doll in half
The caster must make a small doll out of whatever material he wishes beforehand. No task is required to create this doll, as it is only symbolic of a target. Once ready to unleash the spell, the caster breaks the doll in half. If successful, all of the target’s tasks are modified by +4diff for the duration of this spell. Additionally, the target’s padding and armor ratings are reduced by one for the same period. Note that this spell does not affect demons or the undead. Curse of Besting (specific ability)
Alteration (Vitomancy)
difficulty: 14
casting: 5 minutes
range: 10
duration: 1 day
feedback: 6
effect: specific ability is reduced by 3
components: long, thin stone (destroyed)
gestures: smash stone into ground
incantations: litany of ways that caster may be attacked by the target
charges: 1 (ward)
The caster lists a number of ways in which he may be attacked by the target and then smashes a long, thin stone into the ground. This spell covers any one ability (fitness, awareness, creativity, reasoning, or influence), but each one is considered a separate spell—the ability must be specified when this spell is chosen. The target itself is the ward—if he attacks the caster, the spell is unleashed, reducing his chosen ability by 3. Note that this spell does not affect demons or the undead.
