BLOOD APE

These savage primates are larger and more vicious then other gorilla species. Their name derives from both their thick red fur, and their bloodthirsty tendencies. They are found exclusively in tropical and jungle environments. Like most primates, they are skilled climbers, and can swing and leap from trees with uncanny grace, considering their bulky frames.

In addition to their natural weapons, Blood Apes are intelligent enough to use large bones or branches as clubs. Occasionally, a particularly gifted Blood Ape will learn to use the weapons of one of its victims. They may only use melee weapons in this manner—dueling and ranged weapons are far too delicate for their limited dexterity and intellect.

Due to their great strength and savagery, jungle shamans and tribal holy men sometimes use Blood Apes as guardians or assassins. The simple-minded creatures are fairly easy to manipulate though magical means, though they become instantly enraged at the slightest loss of control.
