The following characters are fully detailed protagonists and supporting cast that the gamemaster can use to spur entire stories or to serve as an ongoing thorn in the gang’s side. Much like their film counterparts, these incidentals are intricate personas, each with their own desires, needs, and schemes. While these characters can be used as-is, they can also be adjusted so that their appearances garner the desired reactions.

Bible Joe, Fallible Preacher
“The Lord said that he would not destroy it for the ten’s sake. I seek those ten.”

The hustlers on the mean streets call him Bible Joe. No one really knows what his real name is. When asked, he simply replies “Joe.” With his Bible in hand, Joe is a common attraction in the poorer neighborhoods. He rarely stays put in one area for long, seeking to awaken the faith of unbelievers.

Apart from recruiting the faithful, Bible Joe is on his own mission of faith. He is the first person to acknowledge his own sin—he is a rabid hypocrite when it comes to moral doctrine. Joe lies, cheats, and even steels in order to convince heathens of their mistaken ways. This has taken a toll on the preacher over the years, but he sees it as a necessary evil for doing the Lord’s work. Joe’s guilt is sometimes overwhelming. He channels it as motivation to help those in need. He has been known to track down missing persons and help raise money by selling family heirlooms.

Joe knows that if he keeps it up, he can bring peace and holiness to the huddled masses, one person at a time. He has all the great (and relevant) Biblical quotes memorized and is not afraid to use them. If someone needs Joe’s help and it is within his ability, the guilt will haunt him until he agrees. And, of course, he will do anything short of murder to get the job done.

Whenever the gamemaster is in need of a distraction, Bible Joe is your man. His aberrant and eccentric behavior (quoting scripture) is perfect when wanting to throw the gang off track in an investigation or provide them with a contact or ally. His mission of the day could even be at cross-purposes with the gang; he is not above calling the police or framing them.

Sylvester von Braun, Antique Dealer
“Notice the fine detail on the underside. There is NO better piece in the city.”

Sylvester owns a small antique shop. His stock is mostly legitimate; the forgeries are hidden behind a false wall in the basement. Sylvester knows everyone in the game and he is well-known as a fence for stolen antiques. He takes customers by appointment only; this is a testament to the success of his small shop. Of course, most of the profits come from the more illicit items in his collection.

Born in Western Europe, Sylvester fled to America shortly after the Nazis came to power. His only family is his daughter, Hilda, who works at the shop from time to time. Recently, his forged items have been finding new homes at an unusually-high pace and he is having trouble keeping up with the orders while maintaining his low profile.

Sylvester has recently become convinced that someone is watching him and to make matters worse, his daughter has left town, leaving only a note. Sylvester thinks that the police are investigating his business and has been very cautious lately. He does not just let anyone in the shop and needs to take precautions when showing the forgeries to prospects. The fact that his daughter is gone is very troublesome, as this is very unlike her.

This character is perfect when the gamemaster needs to send the gang to an art/antique expert. They could also be hired to investigate his shady business dealings or he can hire them to find his daughter. Sylvester could also be the “everyman” who tries to do the right thing, but is somehow involved in a life of crime. Or, he could be the slimy businessman who just happens to be hiding the object for which the gang is looking.
