Blowing Dough
Optional Wealth Ability
Contributor: Collaborative User *Created: Dec 02, 2007Modified: Jan 14, 2019System: genreDiversion i

I have come up with an Ability called Wealth. When first creating your character the character gets an automatic new Ability Rating of 2 for Wealth. The “Wealth” Gimmick can be taken up to two times to increase the character’s Wealth Rating by one rating each time (maximum rating of 5). The player will have to spend points just like they were purchasing an Inherent Gimmick. The “Poor” Gimmick can be taken up to two times to decrease a character’s Wealth Rating by one rating each time (minimum rating of 0). The player will gain points just like when selecting a Detrimental Gimmick. The Wealth Rating can be increased just like any ability during Character Advancement. If a situation comes up during play when limits in a character’s monetary resources become a concern, the Director could ask for a Wealth Task roll. A success means the character has the money available for the task, while a failure means he does not have enough money to purchase the item(s). If you have a Calamity you accrue a Debt, a +1 modifier to all future Wealth rolls until the debt is gone. Just the opposite, if you have a Triumph then you have a -1 Wealth modifier called a Gain. A character may have any number of Debt or Gain points (they are cumulative). One Debt point cancels out one Gain point and vice-versa. Debt and Gain points do NOT carry over between stories or long game sessions*. At the beginning of your group’s next play session we will assume the character(s) have worked off the debts or blown frivolously his/her gains. **This rule is one that requires logical interpretation by both the Director and the player(s) involved.** . The Director will also have to decide on an appropriate Difficulty. For example: Tony has a Wealth Rating of 1. He could probably by a carton or cigarettes, a new pair of pants; or a hand held radio at Trivial Difficulty. He could probably buy a nice meal, a new pair of shoes, or a 13” color TV at Routine Difficulty. Tony could buy a rifle or hand-gun; a plane ticket to Florida, or cheap laptop computer at Complex Difficulty. He could buy a used car; a diamond engagement ring, or buy a 50” HDTV at Challenging Rating. Tony’s Impossible Difficulty purchases could include a brand new sports car; a three bedroom house in a nice neighborhood, or a yacht. Each character can make a number of major purchases throughout the game story or long game session* equal to their Wealth Rating (this will refresh the next group’s game session) with -1 modifier. If the character runs out of major purchases then they no longer can make a major purchase this game session. Of course, it is left to the Director to decide what constitutes a “major” purchase. Each major purchase bestows one Debt point on the purchaser (and they are cumulative). For example: As stated above Tony has a Wealth Rating of 1. He can purchase one major item during tonight’s game session. Some things Tony is considering to may be purchase is a new car; that diamond ring; pay the ransom for his brother’s safe return; or a 3 day/ 2 night trip to Walt-Disney World. The beauty of this Wealth Ability is that it can easily port to different settings. By rewording the Wealth Rating / Character Ability Chart below you can make it fit today’s economics, wild-west economics, or fantasy economics. *Note: A long game session is a story that is not finalized in one sitting. It will take another group’s get together or two to finish the story.

This optional rule was created around the Christmas holiday season and as yet had no feedback. If you would care to share your thoughts, constructive criticism, or changes I started a thread on PIG’s forum: http://www.pigames.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=807
