Stories from the Privateer Typee 2
Part 2 in a series of bounty-hunting/contract scenarios.
Contributor: Precis Intermedia *Created: Aug 17, 2008Modified: Jan 14, 2019System: HardNova ][

A Diryash hunter ship is loose in the Dorrin system. They have captured the USU Meihong, slaughtering the crew. The Typee crew is charged with finding the hunters and stopping them before the Diryash claim yet another victim. The Dorrin System

The Dorrin System is a large, planetary grouping, recently settled by the United Sovereign Worlds. It contans three habitable worlds, all moons of a gas-giant. Two other planets and an additional moon are marginal, but can be terraformed at some expense. The following bodies can be found within the Dorrin System, starting with the inner-most: Olduvai: This mostly-molten world is closest to the sun, Dorrin.
Congo: This marginal world is made up of a chemical-soup atmosphere and produces a great deal of heat.
Rift: This large super-jovian gas-giant sits in an earthlike orbit. It has several moons.
Tanganika: This hot body orbits Rift. It has little free water, most of it being bound in the steamy atmosphere. It does enjoy lots of life, however, being colonized mainly by the Kt’Sorii.
Victoria: Rift’s largest satellite is a lush world of plentiful rainfall and abundant life. It was colonized mainly by Humans.
Turkana: This dusty rock of a world orbiting Rift is thought to hold many minerals.
Albert: Rift’s geologically active moon is rife with sulphuric volcanoes.
Malawi: Rift’s fertile, watery moon is littered with small continents and large oceans. It was colonized mainly by the Tarkosians.
Mweru: This cold and icy moon revolving around Rift has a thick atmosphere of hydrocarbons.

Kenya: This marginal world has a thin, carbon-dioxide atmosphere that maintains icy-cold temperatures.
Uganda: This small gas-giant enjoys many rings and icy moonlets.
Kivu: Uganda’s largest moonlet is a frozen ocean that is cracked and heated by tidal forces. It can be settled, but is hardly ideal for life.
The Red Belt: This vast asteroid field is yet unsettled.
Angola: This frigid, little planet has no atmosphere.
Burundi: Yet another small ice-ball, this world has a tenuous atmosphere and maintains the orbit of two moonlets. The Participants

The Meihong (First Victim)
The Meihong is a big freighter, designed to carry massive quantities of cold cargo between star systems. The Meihong is under lease by the colonizing authorities on Rift’s moons, carrying invaluable agricultural and construction equipment to the colonies, returning with whatever the colony can spare to sell from its own development efforts. The Meihong was declared overdue five days ago, and was just found drifting in orbit around Rift, with its crew slaughtered and the one-hundred and twenty cargo containers stripped and missing. The Typee is in the Dorrin System, carrying medical supplies to Malawi when the Meihong is found, and the characters are offered a big contract for getting the pirates who did this, as well as a bounty for each cargo container that they can retrieve intact. Another ship is due any day—the Pawnee Maru, carrying settlers for all three moons. The authorities are also worried about this ship, and ask that it be protected. USU Meihong, Freighter

The Glorious Assassin is a very large Diryash hunter ship, armed with typical Diryash weapons and fitted with a detachable cargo hold. She carries a large crew for assaults and boardings. The Glorious Assassin stripped the Meihong, transporting the cargo containers to Kivu. The Diryash have melted a cache for their loot on the icy surface of Kivu, allowing them to transport it back to their homeworld at their leisure. They have also set up fuel tanks and a small base on Kivu. Some fifteen Diyash live on the base, which is armed for self defence. The Glorious Assassin is now loose in the system, looking for more prey. The Glorious Assassin, Diryash Vessel

The Pawnee Maru is a freighter-tug, as opposed to being a passenger vessel, despite her current purpose. She pushes three huge containers that are bolted to a skeletal framework, each full of settlers destined for one of the three moons. There are about two-hundred and fifty settlers, both adults and children, in each container. The containers also hold the settlers’ life savings and posessions, as well as a supply of air, power, and sanitary facilities. Each container is self-sufficient, and any communication between them and the tug is computer-controlled. Most of the craft’s fuel supply is bolted to the framework. She can, at any time, detach the framework and skedaddle at high-speed, but doing so leaves her very short on fuel. Of course, the framework and attached containers would eventually spiral and burn up in the local sun. By that time, it would be too late for the settlers anyway. The cointainers are not abundant with the necessities of life. USU Pawnee Maru, Freighter-Tug
