Treasure Awaits! Monks
Guidelines for adding Monks/Martial Artists
Contributor: Salvatore m. *Created: Dec 18, 2011Modified: Jan 13, 2019System: Treasure Awaits!

The following document introduces a new vocation to AO:TA!: the Monk. Note that this additional vocation is taken from the upcoming Honor Awaits!* document which should be submitted to the Collaborative shortly. The monk (sometimes referred to as martial artist) is a warrior-type character whose offensive prowess focuses on unarmed combat. Through intense and extensive training, a monk’s body becomes his weapon. 1.Ability Ratings Use the table below.
 Roll  Monk Abilities
 1  3-3-2
 2  2-5-1
 3  2-3-3
 4  4-3-1
 5  3-2-3
 6  2-4-3
2.Pursuits Choose from Athletics, Brawling, Foraging, Literacy, Stealth, Martial Arts**. 3.Weapons Because of the monk’s narrow focus on unarmed combat, the only weapon available to this vocation is the Staff. 4.Armor Monks will rarely use armor, but if they choose to do so, leather armor is the bulkiest armor they will wear. Use the table below to determine starting armor (if any).
 Roll  Monk Armor
 1  None
 2  None
 3  None
 4  None
 5  None
 6  Leathers
5.Additional Notes The following rules apply to characters that choose the Monk/Martial Artist vocation. Monks & Brawling Being masters of unarmed combat, a monk’s Damage Rating when attacking unarmed is equal to his or her Brawling pursuit. Thus a monk with a brawling rating of 2 will also have a Damage Rating of 2 for all unarmed attacks. In addition, unarmed attacks performed by monks disregard the double armor rating rule (see AO:TA! p.24). Also, with regards to weapon enhancements via spells (such as True Worth), a monk’s unarmed attacks are treated as weapons. Monks also treat unarmed attacks as weapons with regards to spending experience on signature weapons (see AO:TA! p.35). Only under the most extreme of conditions will monks suffer from being cramped (see AO:TA! p. 23). A monk may use brawling versus any type of close combat attack. **New Pursuit: Martial Arts -MARTIAL ARTS allows the monk to perform the tricks and stunts associated with martial arts. From paralyzing pinches to deflecting arrows, the martial arts pursuit allows the player (and the director) to exercise his or her creativity. Note that the martial arts pursuit cannot be used to inflict damage (brawling is used for that). When in combat, the monk may opt to use martial arts as opposed to brawling with the intent to perform a martial arts type stunt. The exact type of stunt, as well as its desired effect, must be stated before the combat roll. Combat rolls are resolved normally, with the monk using fitness/martial arts against his opponent’s appropriate ability/pursuit +3. If the monk is successful, he may use any generated overkill to perform the stated stunt. Such stunts may only affect an opponent for 1 full turn. Such stunts may include things like impacting an opponents action by +overkillDIFF for 1 turn, or increasing the monk’s armor rating by an amount equal to the generated overkill versus attacks performed by the opponent (again, for 1 full turn). Greater effects, such as completely incapacitating a foe will require the monk to generate a greater amount of overkill (such as 3) for the stunt to take effect (if such is the case, the director will inform the player of any overkill requirement before hand, giving the player the option to try something else). Creative and crafty players may also find uses for martial arts outside of combat. This, of course, is subject to the director’s approval. *Honor Awaits! is an oriental-fantasy supplement for AO:TA! which will be submitted to the Collaborative.
