Man, Myth & Magic is likely misunderstood by many, particularly experienced roleplayers. What it offers is not the typical "here are the rules, go play" format. Rather, it is organized more like a beginner's set. The first book (the first section of the classic reprint) lays out the very basics of the rules, avoiding the more-complex aspects. It starts the characters out as gladiators, touches on the basic attributes, and how to hit and damage someone in combat with a sample adventure.

Once the basics of roleplaying are experienced, the Advanced Rules in the second book can come into play. These are the core of the game, focusing on the failure rate (how to roll dice and modify the result needed for success based on attributes and various situations). Characters can now reincarnate as various nationalities, including Africans, Britons, Egyptians, Gauls, Greeks, Hebrews, Hibernians, Visigoths, Romans, and Orientals. Each nationality focuses on several classes, such as warriors, merchants, sorcerers, and druids. Optional rules are also presented, such as secondary characteristics like devotion, hearing, drinking, and luck. Elements like weapons, poisons, and spells are also discussed here.

Finally, the third book offers adventure. A sequel to the introductory adventure of the first book helps to further explain the game before moving on to the Advanced Rules. There are four advanced serialized adventures intended to be played in order, but each can also stand on its own. These focus on puzzle-solving, interaction with various personalities, and combat. They can also be extended with supplemental books (episodes 5 through 9); see the MM&M Product Guide for a list of classic books in the line, which will eventually be re-released as classic reprints. At the end of this book is also advice on running the game, as well as maps for generic use and the included adventures, plus random encounter tables for the various nations.

In closing, the presentation of the rules work well when teaching newcomers to roleplaying. The advanced rules are intended for those who have experience, but the basics must still be read to understand how to integrate both sets of mechanics. Hailed as an exciting early roleplaying game by many, and hugely misunderstood by others (in my opinion), I have decided to bring it back to give more people a chance to undertake Man's Greatest Adventures. | 4 Comments | Add Comment | Permanent Link | | Return to Overview | Narmer Commented: | Jul 14, 2019 | 4:04 pm | |
