Unexpectedly Good DVDsDec 22, 2008 | 2:24 pm
Every now and then I get a DVD from Netflix that I don't expect to be particularly good, but actually is. Here are a few:

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor: I hated the first Mummy and tolerated the second, but I really liked the historical bits on which this one was based, even down to the terra-cotta army. The same stupid primary characters are what drag this down.

Street Kings: Didn't get good reviews, but it drew me in and kept my attention. If you like The Shield, give this a shot.

The Core: Looked like another Journey to the Center of the Earth, but was very entertaining. While the story is rather implausible, the effects and cast make up for it.

Seven Years in Tibet: I put off watching this for ages, but it's very interesting. Not particularly exciting, but tells a good account of one man's experiences in Tibet, culminating in the Chinese invasion.

Unleashed: Looks like yet another crazy excuse for martial arts action, and it sort of is, but with some storytelling.

The Majestic: Jim Carrey doing what he does best -- drama. This is a good family movie without his normal craziness.
