I finally broke down and updated my copy of Filemaker Pro to the latest, version 10. I was using v6 -- and while it worked perfectly fine on my Intel Mac, it did have two issues that annoyed me. The first is that it must be in the foreground when it starts up; otherwise, it pesters me until it is. The second is that the mouse scroll wheel does not work within drop-down lists. Minor little things, but very annoying. There was also a third issue -- fonts were not anti-aliased like they were in every other program (because it used an older Mac framework), but that was easily fixed with a little program called Silk. Now I can dump it, since I only used it for Filemaker.

I found a great deal on v10, so I ordered it after reading all the hype (a few new features caught my eye). It arrived today. Installation was a snap, as was converting my old databases, which I use to track sales and royalties. I come to find that you still can't use the mouse scroll wheel to navigate drop-down boxes or pop-up menus. I mean that's a standard OS X interface feature. After 5 or 6 OS X-compatible versions, they still can't get that to work? I know it's silly, but it makes working with the database that much faster. Imagine having to choose one item from a list composed of all items on this site from a single dropdown menu.

Apart from that, it is faster than the old one (because it is Intel-native) and has a real OS X toolbar. It can also interface with SQL databases, so I may just link the site's database with it to make transferring sales more convenient. Not today, though ;) |
