DVD Picks and Warcosm Assault QuickieFeb 08, 2009 | 2:58 pm
Continuing from the previous entry about Warcosm Assault, here's an image of the new race: a Crozian Continuum Officer:

Moving on, my latest DVD choices as I go to classics:

Deep Space Nine, season 7: This was the best Star Trek franchise and its best season (the final season). Captain Sisko's quest reopens the wormhole which restores the Bajorans' faith, a new host for Dax arrives, and Colonel Kira plays chicken with the Romulans.

Lovejoy, Season 4: I had seen this season a dozen times on TV (it used to be on A&E and PBS), so it wasn't the most thrilling, but discs 3 and 4 had some of the best episodes.

Forever Knight: I decided to watch this series again after how many years. The first season tries to find itself, but the final episodes of the last season were incredible. Overall, an enjoyable series. I remember watching this on Saturday afternoons alongside the Highlander series. I'll have to get Highlander next.

Right now I'm waiting for a few DVD that are either coming soon or not currently available due to demand:

Dead Like Me: Life After Death: A followup to the late Dead Like Me series.

Religulous: This is supposed to be pretty funny.

The Day the Universe Changed: I used to watch this on the Learning Channel (or was it Discovery?) years ago. This is James Burke's masterpiece for connecting historical inventions, discoveries, and events to modern day technology and events. Much better than his other series, Connections.

One Foot in the Grave, Season 5: This is a funny British series about a retired man who gets into the most oddball situations, sometimes by his own intolerant doings, but usually because of luck. Some episodes are, of course, better than others, but this is a great series overall. Start with Series 1, but expect it to begin somewhat slow as it sets up the show.

Black Books: I already saw this funny British series via Netflix, but I wanted to watch it again. It is extremely crazy. The first episode is bizarre as it sets up the show, but the others are typically very funny. It's about a guy who runs a book shop, but doesn't want any customers coming in, disturbing him. He hires an exec who goes nuts and quits his former job. He's treated more like a slave than an employee. Both are fairly stupid and off. Don't get stuck after two episodes - go further and it will surprise you.

* I really want to catch up with Deep Space Nine. I watched it on television when it was in its second (?) time around in syndication, but then the channel I was watching it on dropped it in the last seasons. So just as I was really starting to get into it, saying, "Wow - Star Trek does ongoing plot development instead of episodic stand-alones? More complex moral issues? Dynamic character growth? I really like this..." - it vanishes. I've always wanted to see how it ended, but now it's been so long since I've watched it that I'll need to start all over again to get the full effect.

* I've never been a big fan of Bill Maher and I don't think he'd last long in argumentation against an actual theologian or biblical scholar.

* I'll have to look up The Day The Universe Changed. I used to love watching Connections.

Deep Space 9 was brilliant towards the middle to end. I missed the final season also, because the station moved it to 3 or 4 AM. I think this was just about the time that UPN was created, so the station probably aired it to oblige the contract, but didn't really care about it, since they were losing Star Trek rights. I really did not like Odo though. He annoyed the hell out of me - the typical Vulcan/Android/Alien complex was what did it. Not a great episode, I did like the baseball match episode vs the Vulcans.

I can take Bill Maher in small doses.
