As bad as it gets...Mar 09, 2009 | 11:43 am
I went to eat at Golden Corral yesterday with family. They've been advertising lately about their coconut shrimp and other nice dishes. For those not familiar with the place, it is a buffet restaurant similar to Old Country Buffet (if anyone has heard of that). First, the line is out the door. Once inside, and finally at the counter, you order drinks ($1.99 extra for free refills) and pay for everything up-front. Then you have to wait for a table to become available (while your soda gets warm). When finally seated, we had a table for 4 and a table for 2. They couldn't even be bothered to push them together.

It gets better. It feels like a school cafeteria -- noisy and crowded. Putting "corral" in the name was very appropriate. When you go up for food, they are out of several dishes (such as fried chicken), for which people are waiting, blocking your access to other things. Kids run around trying to cut in front of you. After finally getting some food, it's not bad. Not worth the effort and wait, but not bad. Then towards the end of our noisy meal, it gets even noisier as the staff whistle and clap right next your ear so that they can wish some idiot kid a happy birthday with a tiny muffin. Not once. Not twice... well, you get the idea... no less than four times.

So, they basically herd you into the restaurant (you pass through an area that looks like where the cows make their last walk). Then they build up your appetite by making you wait standing. Then they split you up. Then they barrage you with excessive noise. Then they expect you to leave a tip. If I had my way, I'd be asking for my money back (my service charge for putting up with them).

The moral of the story: stay away from Golden Corral.

I've been to the one in my town, and overall, I usually enjoy the food. There have been times where the 'Corral' lives up to its name (especially Sundays).

One of the things I really like about Golden Corral, is that they support the Veterans by having a free dinner on/around Veterans Day, and Vets also get a discount on regular days.

But normally, I tend to avoid "Buffet Restaurants" due to what you discussed earlier.

There's actually a chinese buffet we go to also, which does not have these problems. It is always crowded, but it is also well run and stocked.
