Pursuits vs. SkillsMay 11, 2009 | 8:27 pm
A few people have asked why genreDiversion 3E uses Pursuits instead of Skills. Why use a new term when skills are generally the standard? The answer has two parts.

1. Pursuits are not skills. They are focused avenues of interest in which a character trains, studies, and practices beyond normal capacity. Characters have a basic knowledge in all but academic pursuits, so they are already trained to a degree. Thus, skills represent both lesser capacities than pursuits and equal capacities as pursuits. That's why I purposely made a distinction by using a different term.

2. Pursuits can also encompass larger avenues of training similarly to Active Exploits' Fields of Expertise, but with their varied levels of competency. While not directly utilized in genreDiversion 3E, this method is primary in the upcoming Story Engine 3E.

In short, there is a difference. It wasn't an arbitrary terminology change ;)

GD3 is the traditional subset of Story Engine 3E, which is more story/scene-based with less focus on details like movement and individual actions.
