Apparently, there was a small explosion in the basement of a dollar store (when I day dollar store, I mean $1+) this morning about two blocks from my house. Lots of fire engines and police. No smoke. People were evacuated to the school across the street. No reports on the news until the end of the Noon broadcast. No reports throughout the day even though there must have been a dozen fire trucks, tons of police, and a bunch of helicopters. They blocked off the main street, so everyone has to turn off onto my street. All that and still no reports on the television. Then comes the 4:00 news on one channel with a 5-second mention towards the middle of the broadcast. Same with another channel, despite the street being closed (and buses pouring down my street for the detour) and all those fire trucks making a racket. 5:00 news isn't much better. I don't get it. If a politician gets a paper cut, they break into normal programming for a special report, but when actual news occurs, it's not important. Unbelievable.

Normal stuff...news is about what they think you need to know. I remember the presidential (re)-inauguration of 2005. Downtown Seattle had thousands of protesters, helicopters, police in armor, closed streets, etc. Not one word on local news.

Wow, that's crazy. I'm still surprised that this story hasn't gotten bigger press: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,524799,00.html

The mainstream media is pretty much worthless, if not dangerous.

The news, sadly, is about ratings and nothing else. And I agree that it is greviously irresponsible and usually dangerous. Sometimes I think the news directors at these loathsome news organizations read Orwell's 1984 not as the horrifying critique of politics and media that it is, but rather as a clever "How To" manual. What did H.G. Wells say? "Then I look about me at my fellow men. And I go in fear."

Of course, I'm a cynic, so what do I know?

One thing that really annoys me is that the local news reports on national and international stuff too. If I wanted to see national or international news, I'd watch the national/network news.
