All Stretchy and StuffJun 07, 2009 | 2:15 pm
I'm grinding away at Bold & Brave, the supers add-on for genreDiversion 3E. Elasticity is one of those powers that baffles me. It's not that I can't understand why someone would want it, I just don't understand how it would happen. I mean did someone put his hand in a vat of rubber and now he's made of rubber? It just seems very odd when you think about. Another one is being able to mimic other characters' powers. How would someone gain this ability? If it's a natural mutation, then he's a real freak. Then there's growing to the size of a house. Was he exposed to some sort of weird radiation from a comet that makes him grow? And just how does he grow extra limbs? Two possible explanations for some, but not all, of these powers is that the character is either an alien, totally different from our perceptions of life, or that he has access to a lot of really cool gadgets. As long as those gadgets aren't destroyed, he's got some neat tricks up his sleaves.

 If you're wondering how he eats and breathes, and other science facts- just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax..."

Nothing in comics makes sense. Just go with it.

Any MST3K reference is a good thing. :D

I have to agree. Comics don't make sense. Go with it!

This is like complaining that Harry Potter doesn't obey the laws of physics.

It just strikes me as very bizarre. Who invented the elasticity power anyway?

Good question. I have a million books on superheroes and I can't find the answer. I think it might have been the creator of Plastic Man, but I have nothing to back that up save the age of the character and the fact that I cannot recall a single golden age hero with stretchy parts. Maybe it was someone's enthusiastic girlfriend?

Pretty sure it was Plas now. He debuted in 1941 (so he is a Golden Age character) in Police Comics #1. He was created by Jack Cole. Unless there is a pulp hero somewhere that I do not know of, that would almost have to make Jack Cole the creator of stretchy heroes. Pretty danged cool, even if it is a bizarre power.

Agreed. It is a cool power.
