Pursuits, what?Jun 28, 2009 | 2:23 pm
I've previously covered the five abilities of genreDiversion, et al. I've also touched on pursuits vs. skills, but I wanted to clarify this difference a bit more.

Surely, they are just skills, you ask. The answer is yes and no. Pursuits can be skills, albeit beyond basic knowledge, but they can also be more. They can represent occupations. For example, a carpenter could possess the carpentry pursuit (a skill), but a contractor could have a single pursuit called building contractor (a vocation). Carpentry may be used for all things dealing with wood, but building contractor covers all aspects of that profession, from financial issues related to building houses to the essentials of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, heating and air-conditioning, etc.

While I don't recommend vocation-encompassing pursuits for genreDiversion 3E, they can be used if desired. On the other hand, this utilization of pursuits is the preferred method for Story Engine 3E.
