IG2/GD3 Fantasy EthosJul 17, 2009 | 7:15 pm
I've been working on quite a few RPG projects, including Iron Gauntlets 2, Story Engine 3E, Bold & Brave, Thousand Realms (Maelstrom Crossroads), and The Colonies 2.0. There is much overlap between the other projects, which is why they are all being developed together.

Seeing as how Iron Gauntlets 2E is very close to genreDiversion 3E in capability, it would also make a good fantasy toolkit for GD3, which will probably be available first. This toolkit will focus on creating fantasy characters by combining background and vocation. Unlike in Iron Gauntlets 1E, background is a multi-faceted element which essentially combines Race + Culture + Society + Religion. Race is obvious (representing human, elf, etc), but culture represents the character's way of life in a habitat (like cityfolk, treefolk, and swampfolk). Society represents the type of community (like tribal, noble, gentry, and savage). Finally, religion represents the type of faith (like monotheism, animism, and manichaeism). Put these all together along with a vocation and you have a pretty good picture of the character.

For example, Jonish is a Silvan Elf Shaman: elf + treefolk + tribal + animism + shaman.

I'm in favor of anything that makes character creation quick and painless, especially if it avoids the 'do I need this skill... what about this skill...' questions. Having full control is great, but it's also nice to have a streamlined approach layered on top if you're new to the system, want to roll up something random, or just want a quick character.
