What Happened? WEG SW2E?Jul 30, 2009 | 12:27 am
I picked up a copy of West End Games' Star Wars second edition revised and expanded on ebay the other day. I have the original first edition books, but in a nostalgic mood, I wanted to see what 2E was like. I was really surprised by the poor writing in places. I counted the word "seemed" three times in two contiguous sentences. I also don't like the non-photographic art. It really detracts from the Star Wars feel. While the color is nice, I prefer the first edition. Perhaps it's just me, but it kind of lost some of its charm.

Star Wars from WEG really lost its shine for me after the first edition. Part of the problem was, as you point out, the art. Second, the game system itself was expanded and more detailed and I didn't like that. The first edition rules were simple, intuitive, and fun. The later editions added nothing of value.

Have you seen the D6 Space book that was released a few years ago? While I generally like the D6 rules, I didn't like that game at all (or any of the other D6 books released together with it). I totally agree with you that the original D6 Star Wars was best. It was actually a pretty incredible game in its day.

I found a blend between the two editions worked best for me and my group. In particular, vehicle and starship rules from 2E were better, but I used most of the basic Force/lightsaber rules from 1E. 1E had a "holy crap, we're playing Star Wars" feel to it, while 2E was more like "hey, cool, we're playing the Star Wars RPG."

D6 Space, Fantasy, and Adventure were sort of letdowns for me. I'm using 1E and 2E as the inspiration for Stormrift in terms of look and scope.

It's funny you mentioned the newer D6 Books, as I owned D6 Fantasy until I auctioned it off a year ago. Total letdown. It was way too complicated, the layout and art were poor, and it lacked any kind of soul.

As Spahn said, the 1E Star Wars was like being in the movie. I still think the D6 system is a valid one, but it just got bogged down with unnecessary mechanics and detail.

Same here. There was very little fantasy to D6 Fantasy. Where were the demi-humans? Same with D6 Space - where were the aliens? I think "soul" is the perfect word to describe what they are lacking.
