Ingenuity and AbilitiesSep 17, 2009 | 3:42 pm
This thread at TheRPGSite brings up a point about GDi/GD3 fitness being the uber-stat, meaning it's all important. I simply don't agree. If you read my examples of how to utilize other abilities in place of fitness, I think you'll realize what I mean (this is actually covered briefly in The GD3 Manual). Here's my example:

"...Let's say you pick up an alien gun and want to fire it. Defer to the reasoning ability to figure out how it works -- use that for the task to shoot it. Or, imagine you are on TV in a sports competition and want to do something special -- you use influence to pull off a cool stunt to impress the audience with your style. How about if you throw a punch at the last minute -- use creativity to show how the character can improvise on the spot -- his use of martial arts was creative rather than just going by the book."

I'd really like to hear your own creative ways of doing this. Let's have them.

I allow and encourage all sorts of 'stunting' not only with other attributes, but with other skills in combat to keep things fresh. People have used obvious things like intimidation, but also others like engineering (I forget the actual name at the moment) to notice a flaw in a structure and cause a cave-in.

People still take crafts as their incompetency, though.

Don't let them take crafts as an incompetency if they keep doing it.

It doesn't bother me, or I would have banned it already. One day, one of them will have to make a critical pottery roll.

That's usually how I handle metagaming - put them in situations where it's crucial. In Star Wars WEG everyone scoffed at the beast riding skill until I crashed them on a planet where everyone flew around on bird-creatures and one of the players botched his roll . . .
