Exiled in Eris
Brett's Blog

Old SchoolSep 26, 2009 | 12:54 pm
Back to Ancient Odysseys. If you missed the other blog entries, this is the game that's got me really excited and is currently on a fast track for development. It combines the wonder of the old Red Box set of D&D with the simplicity and flexibility of the new genreDiversion 3 rules. It's more tightly focused than Iron Gauntlets, built for a certain style of play. The basic four player races - human, dwarf, elf, and hobling - plus a new fifth race - draconian - meet six vocations - bard, cleric (divine or infernal), pathfinder, rogue, warrior, and wizard (hedge, dire, spry, or quietus schools). Characters gain new gimmicks, exploits, and ability bonuses as they adventure. Experience the wonder of finding secret doors, avoiding traps, skulking in the shadows, looting the dead, sicking dogs on the enemy, casting spells, bribing or intimidating the enemy, plundering treasure, and meeting dangerous monsters. Now if this isn't old school, I don't know what is :) Just look at this image...

And here's what a Draconian looks like:

Sounds like it's going to hit all the right notes, and the art looks good. I'm looking forward to it.

The Red Box (actually I just had the booklet for some reason) did hold a lot of wonder for me when I was young. Partly because it was new, and partly because it was fantastic without being too fantastic. Magic could do wondrous things without being able to do everything, magic items were interesting rather than necessary, and the hit point/combat curve wasn't too steep. For me, it lost some of that wonder as the levels (and editions) increased.

I'll be interested to see it when it's done. It sounds like what I wanted at the beginning of the summer.
