More AFOM 2ENov 09, 2009 | 5:59 pm
Quite a few people have emailed me over the weekend, in search of more info about A Fistfull of Miniatures 2E, so here it is...

1. What is it? AFOM is a set of miniatures rules for handling large-scale battles with 15mm figures. While 25mm to 30mm figures can also be used, space limits their effectiveness. Miniatures need to be mounted on rectangular stands/bases, the sizes of which vary. Because each unit (a collection of stands in formation make up a unit) can be set to whatever scale of men is needed (small or large), even massive battles can be resolved in less than a few hours.

2. Just about any era before the use of firearms can be uttilized for the battles.

3. There are four types of units: infantry, cavalry, chariotry, and engines. Leaders can also be attached to units. Units are defined by the following: number of stands, armor, arms, and quality. Units can either be built by allocating points or simulating actual historical armies by your own judgement. Once an army is written down, no further paperwork is done.

4. There are six phases per turn of battle: initiative, assault, maneuver, ranged attack, melee attack, and rally. Movement is determined by unit type, qualities (like armor), and formation. Ranged and melee attacks are resolved in a similar manner--simply refer to the relevant table for applicable bonuses and penalties, apply them to an averaging die roll, and then remove stands from the defender based on the relevant casualties table (compare modified die roll to number of attacking stands).

5. A few sample battles are provided, as are sample armies, but the real fun is in creating your own armies.

6. For economy, a PDF of 15mm and 25mm stand templates lets you print them off to make paper armies rather than having to buy metal miniatures.

7. I haven't settled on a final price yet, but probably $4.95 for the PDF. I don't know about the print version yet, which also includes 2 six-sided dice and an averaging die, as well as the PDF (when purchased direct).

I hope that answers any questions you have. Remember that this is only for the Basic Game. An Advanced Game add-on will provide ability-trait mechanics, which lets you customize armies further, such as with fantasy elements.

And when will it be available? I use the old rules and really want to move to the new ones.

I'm shooting for this month. It's virtually done, but there's always something creeping in to take up my time.
