Is the Wii for me?Dec 09, 2009 | 5:55 pm
I'm considering getting a Wii system. I like the idea of the sports pack (baseball, tennis, bowling, boxing, etc.) for exercise and the downloadable classic games like Street Fighter and Eternal Champions. It doesn't do HD though and I haven't really seen any great graphics on it -- no Virtua Fighter or Street Fighter 4. I need to know what good games there are for it. Can anyone talk me into getting it?

i have one and i enjoy it a lot. graphics arent important to me. i have plenty of games to play and much more on the way. what kind of games do you like?
Brett Commented:Dec 09, 2009 | 6:45 pm
I like action games. I don't have a lot of time to devote, so nothing too complicated. Star Wars: Force Unleashed looks cool as does Samurai Warriors, but they seem to get bad reviews. I like first-person games and fighting games mostly since I don't need to devote much thought to them.

i dont bother with scores, read the stuff they say about it. especial if its multiplat and it scores better on another platform.

the basic(zelda, mario, other main nintendo stuff), no more meroes, muramasa, soul calibur legends, dragon quest swords, tales of symphonia, most of the wii shooters are light gun games but there are the call of duty and medal of honr games on the wii. brawl is a great fighting game. most of the wii fighting games are based of other games or anime. madworld is another good game.and if you like to go old school there are a lot of virtual console games on the wii shop. and of course there are the wiiware games.ive never had trouble finding games on any system.

I got one because my wife wanted it.

We enjoy it a lot. Granted, graphics aren't the best, but the interaction with family/friends is great fun and worth it. My wife loves it because you actually have to use the control rather than "mash buttons" as she says.

We got the "Ghostbusters" game and it is a blast! You actually have to catch a ghost in the stream, then slam it around a little to get it tired before throwing the trap out. Naturally, keeping in the spirit of the "ghostbusters" you can blast/destroy everything in sight and you can get slimed.

The Wii Sports that comes with it is played by us and guests a lot. When purchasing a 2nd remote, we got a package deal with 'Wii Sports II' or something to that effect. Don't bother with getting that deal. It SUCKS. Now they have the NEW Wii expanded motion remote with a whole new Sports package for it. We don't have it yet, but we WILL get that one. I tested it at the store, and it has some fun ones.

I'll chime in and say that my *wife* actually suggested we get one. I'm an old Nintendo fan, having owned every console save the GameCube, so we dove right in. As others have pointed out, the Wii is no graphics workhorse. However, the interaction via motion controls is a total riot. If you want fitness, get Wii Fit Plus with the balance board accessory. While you can do traditional workouts with it, it also has a ton of games to play in it that work you pretty good. I think my favorite game so far is MarioKart Wii because it just has bright graphics, smooth animation, 32 tracks, online play, and a bunch of unlockables. Not to mention my wife and I love the steering wheel control scheme.

One caveat. Like it's little brother the DS, the Wii has a ton of shovel-ware made for it. Lazy developers tack on poor motion controls to already crappy games and sell them for $20. Read those reviews!

I dunno. I think if you're looking for solo games to play you'd be better off with the Xbox or PS3. There are a lot more titles with better gameplay and graphics--the Call of Duty series is practically worth the price of the console for all the play you get out of it.

The wii strikes me as more of a two-person game system. The sports games are simple and can get dull after you consistently beat them time and again (not that hard to do). The graphics aren't that great, but the interactivity and smack talking with your friends increases the fun level.

As an added note, I've found that watching people play games is hilarious (I'm talking to you Guitar Hero)--almost as much fun as playing the games yourself.

I sold my 360 a long time ago and just have the Wii. Some games that I've enjoyed:

Super Mario Galaxy

Zelda - Twilight Princess

House of the Dead 2&3

Mario Kart Wii

Muramasa

I'm looking at picking up Madworld, Okami, and No More Heroes. The virtual console is also too good to resist. I've played some great games again and they still hold up (Mario 3, for instance). Looks like you already ordered, so have fun! :)

Xbox and PS3 are too much for me and I like the fact that you can get a workout. I did order it. And the virtual console was one of the factors.
krakajak Commented:Dec 11, 2009 | 12:38 am
I'm happy you ordered one. I think you will enjoy it.

Although don't expect to get too much exercise out of Wii Sports(besides boxing *whew*).

I would avoid games not specifically designed for Wii as most ports are pretty lackluster.

Also, online multiplayer is a pain in the butt. However, I will totally pwn your face of when Tatsunoku vs. Capcom comes out;)

I got it for $179.99 via jr.com. They were running a $20 off promotion when using paypal, but I think it expired. Free shipping too. I expected it next week, but UPS has it listed for delivery today.

Is Tatsunoku vs. Capcom slated for online play?
djlittle Commented:Dec 11, 2009 | 5:40 pm
LOL!

Yeah, the boxing CAN wear you out, IF you actually box. Or, you can just sit there and flip your wrists. Not much work out there. Here I was.... wearing myself out to a frazzle and actually working up a good sweat by really boxing (my dad taught me--he was a golden glove boxer in the Navy), and I later walked in to see my 12 year-old granddaughter 'flipping her wrists' and kicking major butt. I just shook my head.....

Well, I got it and like it. The tennis and baseball are pretty cool. They all take a bit of getting used to. I connected it to wi-fi and it updated itself, but it could have warned me that it would take a while. Same with downloading a demo of a wii ware game - it should give a percentage or estimated download time. I ordered a cheap component video cable. Now I have to look for good cheap games on ebay and get a classic controller for the virtual console games. Maybe a second set of regular controllers also.
Brett Commented:Dec 18, 2009 | 8:48 pm
So I got the following so far and waiting for others. These are mostly used copies:

King of Fighters Collection (crappy pixelated port; I'll probably sell it on ebay)

Onslaught (WiiWare; pretty cool FPS sort of like Starship Troopers)

Super Street Fighter II (Virtual Console; out of nostalgia, haven't played it yet since I just got a controller today)

Rogue Squadron III (Star Wars GameCube; this is awesome)

Lego Indiana Jones (awesome)

Wireless GameCube controller (works well)

I'm still waiting for some other stuff; you can get a lot on ebay at a fraction of the cost.
krakajak Commented:Dec 21, 2009 | 7:50 pm
Yes tatsunoku is gonna be online.

Also wiiware has a progress bar. It's the three coin boxes.

Yes, but it's a crappy indicator that makes no sense when you see it for the first time.
