With the finale of the latest Doctor Who production team behind us (finally), I watched an oldie but goodie this past weekend: The War Games. This story is the finale for the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton. For those who watched the End of Time, this should be a treat. That is, if you can get to the end. The War Games is a long story, clocking in at 10 parts. It's also in B&W. It's worth it in my opinion though - and since they are in parts, you can split up viewing time. There's a bit of padding as was usual back then, but not a whole lot compared to other stories. It's very well-written and offers one the earliest appearances of the Sonic Screwdriver and the first appearance of the Time Lords.

Zoe and Jamie tag along as two of my favorite companions. Philip Madoc plays the War Lord. He was also Professor Solon in The Brain of Morbius. And Bernard Horsfall portrays one of the Time Lords, who was Chancellor Goth in The Deadly Assassin (which also featured the Master). Whether or not Horsfall's character was the same in both stories is unknown. |
