With Treasure Awaits almost ready for release, I've been thinking about Ancient Odysseys Advanced. The framework is done and you've probably already seen some of it in the forums, from the various races (I like the Draconians) and vocations (the pathfinder is pretty cool) to social maneuvers like haggling and parlaying to the use of exploits and optional miniatures. The next step is determine if any other pieces make it in there. For example, backgrounds may be an optional element, allowing you to build your own racial factions. Or maybe the setting will coincide with that of the proposed A Fistfull of Miniatures 2E Fantasy add-on. I also like the idea of vocational creatures, meaning that you can have goblin soldiers, goblin leaders, and goblin infiltrators, each with different capabilities just like player-characters.

It's also possible that Iron Gauntlets 2E will be wrapped into the Ancient Odysseys line in some form (like some of those elements already mentioned). It seems to me that IG 1E has done what it was designed to do and needs no further development. It is a more free-form experience, less worried about game balance and more concerned with providing tools rather than strict rules. There also appears to be less interest in the Impresa rule-set than the GD3 ruleset. I still haven't decided on anything yet, but I am shifting focus to AO which can certainly handle IG gameplay (this is no big deal, since switching between the two mechanics is pretty easy).

I'm sure that there will be a few harsh words because some will think that IG is being abandoned. This is definitely not the case. Rather, a wider range of elements can be mixed to create something better. A consolidated line will be more beneficial, since it will provide more overall compatibility and a larger range of support material. | 4 Comments | Add Comment | Permanent Link | | Return to Overview | gonster Commented: | Jan 12, 2010 | 5:19 pm | |
