I got a copy of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom on ebay for my Wii, so here's a mini-review of it. I had been looking forward to this for some time, because I've been jonesing for Street Fighter II action in a modern shell. This game is the latest iteration of the vs. Capcom 2D fighters. Only three Street Fighter characters are present (one is from SFIII) with the rest from other Capcom games (like MegaMan and Darkstalkers) and Tatsunoko series. What's Tatsunoko? It's a Japanese anime company that's been around for ages. Some of you may remember Battle of the Planets. That's an American version of one of their animes.

Graphics are top-notch. Sure, there's the odd pixelated edge, but it is a Wii after all. Don't expect perfection. Animation is really smooth and well choreographed. Gameplay is as one would expect from Capcom in this field -- very responsive. There are several options for controlling the game, from using the remote, remote and nunchuk, classic controller, GameCube controller, and even a special arcade stick. I've been using the remote and nunchuk, which is actually the easy method. Unlike traditional Street Fighter gameplay, there's one attack and one special attack button. It's great for kids and when you don't really want to invest a lot of thought into the type of attack you want to perform. However, traditional gameplay is partially present. Rather than light, medium, and strong punch and kick attacks, you just get light, medium, and strong attacks on certain controllers. You go through each stage with two characters, so you can get the second to join in attacks, which is cool.

I've always liked Street Fighter's music. The only other fighting game music that comes close is probably Virtua Fighter 2, followed by Soul Calibur 2 (which is also excellent on the Wii as a GameCube title). I must say that the music in this game is probably the biggest letdown. It's not that it's bad. It just doesn't have that energetic feel to it and there's just nothing very memorable in my opinion.

The real question is whether or not someone should buy this game. I'd say that it all depends on what you're looking for. If you want a Street Fighter fix, this may or may not do it. On the other hand, if you want a quality 2D fighter that has excellent gameplay and variety, give it a shot.

Oh, did I mention the two huge characters that take up about half the screen? These count as two characters because of their size. One has a really big set of guns. Cool stuff.

I also forgot to mention that you can play against other human opponents online. | 3 Comments | Add Comment | Permanent Link | | Return to Overview | trekfanatic Commented: | Mar 06, 2010 | 2:35 pm | |
