Printing and PoutingApr 07, 2010 | 1:46 pm
My quest for a outside printer to take some of the load off of me has not gone well. They are either too expensive or of inadequate quality. I was going to have the Treasure Awaits Pocket Softcover done by an outside printer, but that's not going to happen. I do have one lined up, but it means having to print too many copies for a decent price. While the quantity is manageable and pricing is very good, I don't want to risk being stuck with too many books. As a result, I'll be making the pocket books in-house. I'm not really set up to do digest-sized, perfect-bound books. To resolve this, I've been recoding my custom imposition software to handle sub-digest books. It's a big pain because it involves painstaking calculations and testing to get it just right, not just for the interior pages, but also the cover. I'm printing a test book as I write this. With any luck, my first attempt will be successful...

...and it wasn't successful, though close. I had to adjust the margins on my color printer (I let it slide for some time, since it only affected where I score the cover and that was easy enough to fix on-the-fly with a ruler). I also need to go back and re-center the interior pages because my top and bottom cuts were not aligned well. My side cut is also off, but I'm not sure what the issue is. I'll fix it in the end, but it may take some time.
