I just want a bookcaseOct 12, 2010 | 2:00 pm
I've got two 3' tall bookcases and had three 6' tall ones. One of the real tall ones came from Walmart - I didn't really like the construction method, but it worked. Then it collapsed on me, ripping up a bunch of fantasy game books and boxes. But I took it rather calmly. Last week I noticed that Staples had the 6' bookcases that I like on sale at half price, so I ordered two for delivery. They arrived last Tuesday, but I didn't get around to putting them together until Friday. To my annoyance, one of them was cracked, so I called staples but they couldn't replace it until today (Tuesday) - that's 4 days and horrible customer service - they should have sent someone around the same day no matter how late it was. They offered a $15 coupon, but that doesn't help much since I don't really want to shop at staples at this point since they are usually overpriced anyway. I tried to put the second one together and that too is cracked. So I have to call again - again Tuesday and another $15 coupon. Still no help from Staples - I'm out money and have to wait 4 days to be made whole for their incompetence. Yes, I do hold companies to high standards, because there is far too much incompetence I have to deal with between internet hassles, eyecare hassles, paper stock hassles, and printing hassles.

Now that I waited four days, they come to pick up the damaged bookcases and drop off the replacements. I open one and lo and behold, it is in good shape. Confident, I now open the second one -- it's cracked just like the first two. Out of 4 bookcases, they could only deliver one undamaged. That just goes beyond incompetence, especially after I told them to make sure they inspect them first, but no one bothered to do that. I now called again (which is actually the fourth call, because I called again on Friday just to bitch). I told them to give me a refund for one of the bookcases and send the driver right back to get it. She tried but wasn't able to contact the driver (didn't seem to try hard enough after only 2 minute), so I told her that I'm just throwing it outside and they can pick it up whenever. She said that was OK and processed my refund. We'll see how long it takes to get it. So with the two coupons I basically get the one bookcase for free, but only if I actually use them, which is highly doubtful.

And don't get me started on the first and last time I ordered something from shoplet.com.

Long story short... it's time to hold these large companies accountable so that they are forced to raise their standards. I don't want to speak with some customer service rep or supervisor. I want to speak to the CEO and actually get something done. If you've watched Undercover Boss, you'll understand the need for more direct customer relations for these large companies.

I understand and completely agree with ya. It has gotten to the point where the products are such crap and the customer service so lousy that I'd honestly either suck it up and spend more money at a quality place, or just improvise stuff. We got a bookcase from Walmart and the crappy processed wood-pulp shelves are sagging just from the weight of books! WTF? It's a bookcase! I'm honestly looking at just buying some cinderblocks and some 1X6s or 1X8s and throwing together my own bookcase. The tabletop light tents I've seen for practicing my commercial photography skills are so pathetic for how much they cost I actually made my own out of pvc, glue, a white sheet, and some inexpensive desk lamps to serve as hot lights. I can white balance for the color cast and despite the extreme monetary savings over a "real" light tent works perfectly fine

If you really want to get classy, start stacking milk crates. They're the perfect size for gaming books.

My other ones are sagging too, but they didn't collapse and aren't cracked :)

Milk crates are good... really strong too, and also are useful for transporting the books.
