A Challenge...Aug 09, 2012 | 7:23 pm
Fantasy in genreDiversion 3E. This is an easy one, since all the tools are already built into the game. Let's approach this the Iron Gauntlets way. First pick a species -- make your own: Dwarves, Elves, etc. Next choose a background -- again, make your own: treefolk, cityfolk, swampfolk, cavernfolk, mountainfolk, etc. Still with me. Now decide on a vocation -- did I mention, make your own: warrior, wizard, paladin, cleric, etc. Anything else? Sure, lots of stuff, but that's for you to decide until I give you something official (and separate from Ancient Odysseys; just guidelines and gimmicks.

Halfling Species:

Halflings are small (3' - 4'6" tall) human-like beings that at first glance can easily be mistaken for human children. They usually have thick, curly hair that ranges in color from blond to chestnut brown, with black or red appearing infrequently. Their eyes are usually brown or green, and often twinkle merrily. Due to their quite widespread love of fine food and drink, halflings are often slightly overweight. This is partially mitigated by their tendency to also enjoy hard work. Many work with the land in some fashion, or with simple crafts such as wood-working or pottery-making. Most halflings live around small to medium human settlements and quite a few also live in larger human cities. Indeed they are not an unusual sight anywhere humans can be found. They are curious by nature, and can be quite stealthy when they wish to be. Most are simple, decent folk, but the occassional halfling of a more larcenous nature is not unheard of. Due to their small stature, halflings often find it difficult to be taken seriously by other species.

Limitations: None

Inherent Gimmicks: Dextrous (1), Acute Hearing (1), Naturally Stealthy (1), Meek (1) (when dealing with any race other than halfling), Undersized (1)

Guild Assassin Vocation:

Assassins are trained to kill individuals for payment, usually through stealth and/or subterfuge. They start out working from back alleys and seedy taverns, but can rise to the highest levels of society if they survive long enough. Many also become spies and even spy masters.

Pursuits - Athletics, Composure, Disguise, Interrogation, Performance, Stealth, and one choice from Brawling, Dueling or Melee

Recommended Pursuits - Herbaalism, Intimidation, Legerdemain, Negotiation, Seduction, Street-Talk, Streetwise, Survival, and Tracking. It is also recommended to develop some sort of cover trade or vocation, such as a crafter or specialist of some kind.

Inherent Gimmicks - Contacts (Assassin's Guild), Enemies (Forces of Law and Order)

Cityfolk Background:

The Cityfolk Background is chosen for characters who were born and raised in a city or large town. Because of this, the character may choose one of the following Gimmicks as part of this Background: Contacts (v), City Compass, or Jack of all Trades.

Nice, but wow, he's pretty potent :)

Ack, I added the Contacts and Enemies Gimmicks from Assassin to the Halfling list instead of the character's list. Brett, could you remove those two Gimmicks from the Halfling list and add them to the character's Gimmicks list?

Indeed, all rolled randomly... using the Precis Roller no less :)

Got it :)

I think the Guild Assassin vocation could be toned down by dropping Athletics and the combat pursuit from it and adding them to the recommended list if the vocation is a bi too buff for an individual's taste. There are certainly assassins who are skilled at their job without having to run, jump, or fight even.

Or you could turn the vocation into role, requiring those pursuits... but vocation is probably best.
