I must admit that I am somewhat drawn to the old school renaissance (OSR). That is, clones and variations of the original D&D rules sets. That's one reason I created Treasure Awaits! -- to get that old school feel, but without D&D mechanics. The other day, I discovered an OSR game that only uses 2d6. No d10s, d20s, etc. It's called Fenris 2d6, and it's put together really well. It's not a direct clone, but takes bits from here and bits from there. The basic task mechanic uses 2d6 and a table. The table provides a target number based on the character's attribute vs a difficulty or contesting character's attribute. The only way you can do it when D&D attribute ratings are used. It is well written. A lot of thought has clearly gone into it. It also focuses on only three classes: warriors, mystics, and magicians -- and four ethnicities: dwarfs, elves, halflings, and humans. Alignment is also handled intelligently. The download is only $2.99 and softcover is in the works by the author. If you like OSR games, but not a cookie-cutter d20, give this a shot.
