I upgraded to MacOS 10.9 Mavericks yesterday. It's a free upgrade for Mac users. While installing, I got an error. It said that my hard drive was damaged and that it couldn't install. It also unmounted my hard drive. That's never good. I used Disk Utility to repair the drive, and it did without issue. That was good. I tried the installer again. This time, it worked without issue, although it did take forever. It gave me an estimate of 45 minutes. I'm not sure how long it really took. It was fine and then restarted to complete the install. It took a while before it could give me a time estimate. And when it did, it said 13 days. Then it trickled down to 3 hours. Again, I didn't track the time, so I don't know how long it took, but obviously that that long, probably around 30-45 minutes. It was finally installed.

It put two new apps in the dock: Maps and something else which I can't remember now, because they are no longer in the dock :). Maps isn't bad, but it still lacks public transportation directions, so we'll stick with Google Maps for now. The new OS does seem a little zippier. I didn't notice much obvious difference, but those behind the scenes upgrades seem to make a difference. The biggest pain is the change they made to Safari. The Open in New Window and Open in New Tab menu items in the right-click menu are reversed, so I keep choosing the wrong one (window). Very annoying.

The installer caught a few incompatibilities, but nothing I really need. I also got Pages, Numbers, and a few other apps updated. The new Pages is pretty nice, but I haven't checked out Numbers yet. I also upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 7.0.3 afterward. Maybe tomorrow, I'll revisit how I only pay $30/month for 3 phones (1 iPhone and two flip phones). Are you curious? You can do it too. |
