Brutes: The Roleplaying GameOct 01, 2014 | 11:35 am
I have secretly been working on a new roleplaying game, based on the Brutes Fantasy Miniatures Microgame. Does it use the same system, you ask. No. It's actually built around the MasterBook rules. I have completely re-written the MasterBook system for this game. I wouldn't call it MasterBook 2.0, but it's leaner and easy to pick up.

You messed with my beloved MasterBook, you exclaim. Yes, I did. It's virtually the same, just a little different. :) For instance, characters possess size (for ranged attacks and spotting) and weight (lifting and falling) ratings, and track glory (being recognized and influencing people). Advantages and Compensations are now Gimmicks just like in genreDiversion - much easier to work with, as there are no A/C columns. Everything else is pretty much the same, just written to be a quicker read and organized in a more-traditional way.

As I said, it's based on the original Brutes, so there are a ton of player races. It's a fantasy game. It's about conflict, physical and social. Hexing magic is in it. This should be very easy and quick in play, with the original hexing techniques (slinging, trilling, painting, and convoking) and some new ones (cursing and breaching). Add fantasy creatures and the MasterDeck cards, and I think you'll find an easier yet exciting game out of the MasterBook rules.

When will it be available, you scream. It still needs some work, so I'm not sure. I will definitely let you know as release draws closer.

In what way?

Fantasy skirmish game turned RPG.

Hmm. I never saw it that way.

It could be in worse company :) The Fantasy Trip was one of my favs back in the day. I think Brutes RPG has even more potential due to it's more free-form nature. Are you going to use the gimmicks mechanic with it's RPG? That's my favorite mechanic from GD, it makes even a simple game like GDi or GD3 so much more adaptable and versatile than other light-weight games IMO. They kinda remind me of better defined aspects from Fate.

Heh, this is what I get for not reading your post again before posting myself. Yes, you are using Gimmmicks, YAY :D

Yeah, it uses regular gimmicks. The ads/comps in MasterBook are great when designing your own setting, but you don't need them for stand-alone games. I like Fantasy Trip. Do you have Heroes and Other Worlds? It's a FT clone.

I do indeed. I wish I still had all my Wizard, Melee, and Fantasy Trip books and games, used to have all that stuff... can't remember what ever happened to it.
