Update on Bloodshadows 3E DevelopmentJul 20, 2015 | 2:48 pm
I've made a few more changes to Bloodhadows 3E's magic again. Spells can either be memorized or read out of a grimoire. Casting them from memory is the default method. Casting from a grimoire is a little harder -- not only mechanically, but it is also not a good idea to carry around an expensive grimoire with you (if you lose or damage it, you're screwed). Spellslingers can memorize more spells than other character roles. There are also blank grimoires, which are essentially journals. When you create a new spell, you note it in the blank grimoire -- now you can use it like a regular spell in a grimoire and even give it to someone else. Memorizing is still better though, and it's typically easier to memorize a spell you create than an established spell, since you have a more intimate knowledge of it.

Whereas casting spells requires one pursuit, creating them needs two: a theory and a school. The rules allow for a variety of effects: augmenting abilities, ability gimmicks, difficulties, damage, and protection; and interacting with demons, people, plants, animals, objects, space, and time.

Feedback is still here from previous editions, only it works slightly differently. A roll on the feedback table is made, modified by certain factors (like the spell's feedback value, overkill, and alignment). Effects can range from light tension or fatigue to another roll on a different table: minor, moderate, significant, or dire feedback. Some examples of feedback include: light burns, memory loss, physical changes (like an extra arm), teleporting to random place, combustion, and portal to another dimension.

And I hope to have a finished cover soon to show everyone.

Other than the obvious of being able to use a spell the character does not have memorized, is there any other benefit to casting from a grimoire, like the ability to cast a more powerful version, or perhaps cast it more ritualistically, like with more than one caster or using stuff like blood sacrifice to power it, etc?

Apart from also being able to copy a spell to a different book, no.
